Officers
Joe Berman, Co-President. Joe came to Washington DC in 1975 to go to grad school at Maryland while at the same time beginning a career in healthcare administration. In 2002, he left healthcare to become a Realtor specializing in residential real estate in DC and close in MD & VA. He has headed th United Way campaign at Inova Health Systems and volunteered for other Jewish organizations such as the Federation and the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation's Capital.
Sue Ducat, Co-President. A member of the board of directors of Anne Frank House (AFH) since 1990, Sue is also on the boards of Rollingwood Citizens Association, Adas Israel Sisterhood and World Child, Inc. Formerly a producer at WETA-TV, she is communications director at Health Affairs, the nation’s leading health policy journal

Susan Klein, Corresponding Secretary. MBA. AFH board member since February 2008, Susan is a member of Adas Israel Congregation and a volunteer visitor for its Hesed Program. Since retiring as a scientific editor in 2005, Susan has also done volunteer work for the DC Public Schools and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Bonnie Lewin, Recording Secretary.
Adina Mendelson, Treasurer. Vocational Expert, President of BEMW, Counseling for the Workplace, Bethesda. 35 years of experience in counseling, coaching, consulting, and workplace employee assistance programs. Former co-president of AFH from 2007-2010, board member from 1998. Currently on the board of the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place (Friendship Place) which also provides homeless services and housing in DC.
Alice Burton (Pres. Emerita). MS, LICSW. AFH past president. Clinical Social Worker at Child Center & Adult Services Gaithersburg, MD. Former board member of Adas Israel Congregation, former community board member of Friendship Place, former board member of Child Center and Adult Services.
Sophie Silfen (1913-2010, Officer Emerita). Born on the Lower East Side of New York, Sophie had been a career WAC who served Generals MacArthur, Westmoreland, and President Eisenhower before she started teaching schools at Adas Israel Congregation after retirement some 30 years ago. Sophie was a beloved and active volunteer at Anne Frank House, Adas Israel Congregation and many other institutions until her death in December 2010.

Catherine Bendor.
Mark Chambers. MPH. AFH board member responsible for development of new foundation and grant relationships. Other Affiliations: President, Association Foundation; Group Co-chair, All Souls Unitarian-Generosity Campaign; Former VP/Chief Development Officer, Heart Rhythm Foundation.
David Cohen. A retired career Federal executive, he is heavily involved in a variety of volunteer activities, primarily homeless programs. An AFH board member since 1994, and served as president for 10 years, from 1997 to 2007. David is liaison to two of our male residents. He also serves on the board and executive committee of Friendship Place and chairs its Program Committee.
Ann Louise Cowan. A founding member of AFH, Ann Louise is a retired outreach worker with Friendship Place (1993 - 1999).
Hazel Keimowitz. Hazel was AFH co-president from 2007 to 2011 and has been an AFH board member for 15 years. She has also been a volunteer docent at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and board member and former co-chair of the Washington/Baltimore Chapter of American Associates of Ben Gurion University. Hazel served as program manager at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (1999-2004) and executive director of the American College of Preventive Medicine (1989-1998).
Ed Kopf. A board member and former president of Adas Israel Congregation and former President of Yachad, Inc, a not-for-profit housing development corporation, Ed is a mediator and Principal of BMC Associates LLC. He formerly served as a senior executive of several public and privately-held companies.
Elaine Kremens.
June Kress. On the AFH Board since November 2009, June also serves as co-president of Friendship Place. She has been in the field of criminal justice for more than 30 years and since 2004 has been the Executive Director of the Council for Court Excellence.

Steve Schwat. Steve has participated in a number of entrepreneurial ventures including investing in real estate since 1996. He is Principal at Urban Investment Partners, where he has managed the construction and renovation of over 1,500 apartment units. Steve has served as mayor and treasurer of the Village of Drummond in Chevy Chase, MD,and as treasurer of the Citizens Coordinating Committee of Friendship Heights.
Dale Sorcher. A native Washingtonian, Dale grew up at Adas Israel Congregation. Her children, ages 16, 14 and 11, are 4th generation at Adas, and are all active in the religious school and youth groups. She attended the University of Michigan and have 2 masters degrees, one from Lesley college (M.Ed.) and Hunter School of Social Work (MSW). She worked in NYC for 11 years, mostly in the field of deafness and hearing-impairment, as a movement/art therapist and child and family therapist and has worked in the field of social work for the past 25 years. She presently works at the Adas Israel Gan Nursery School in the Parent/Toddler program.
